Raising Japan’s Next Generation A Gender Equality View

Organizing Workshops for School Teachers

One of the most effective ways to pass on gender equal perspectives to children, who will be educating the next generation, is to utilize the great influence teachers have on these children. For the past two years, we have been holding workshops titled "Creating Teaching Materials from a Gender-Equal Perspective." In these workshops, teachers looked at material such as "The Atlas of Women" (gender statistics) and "Contemporary Photography" with a focus on gender in order to make teaching materials and lesson plans which can be used in everyday classes, homerooms, and human rights events. Those participating in the workshops include elementary, junior high, and high school teachers from public, private, and other types of schools and encompass a wide range of school subjects. The various backgrounds of these teachers have been utilized to create lesson plans. Another purpose for this course is to highlight the use of our Information Library for school teachers. In order to facilitate this, we arrange time windows at our Information Library so that teachers can collect data and supplementary materials and consult with library staff.
As a result, people who have participated in the workshops have formed groups that hold study sessions and exchange information. Also, organizing workshops designed for teachers has opened up cooperation with the Osaka Prefectural Education Center.
The Dawn Center has accepted new teachers for internships and has provided human rights lecturers for school teacher training courses. We'd like to continue to promote this project.
